10 Learning-Through-Play Ideas at Home in 15 Minutes
Learning at home does not have to be complicated. Short 15-minute activities, done regularly, bring many benefits. Here are ten ideas you can try with materials already at home.
Ten activity ideas
- Letter hunt: find a particular letter on food packaging in the kitchen.
- Count and sort: separate buttons by colour and count them.
- Tape path: stick lines on the floor and ask your child to walk straight, zig-zag and curved lines.
- Pretend shop: practise counting and simple prices with toy items.
- Picture story: show a picture and ask your child to make up the story.
- Bead patterns: build a colour pattern and ask your child to continue it.
- Cut and paste: cut up scrap paper and arrange it into a picture.
- Guess the object: put an item in a bag and ask your child to guess by touch.
- Mirror moves: copy each other’s movements to build focus.
- Draw from shapes: turn circles and triangles into animal pictures.
Tips for success
- Pick one activity, not many at once.
- Follow your child’s interest that day.
- Stop while your child is still having fun.
- Value the effort, not just the result.
Combining with worksheets
A worksheet can close the activity: after the letter hunt, ask your child to trace the letters they found. See the shapes, patterns and logic worksheets for variety.
