Tips to Help Your Child Love Reading from an Early Age

2026-10-19

Children who love books usually grow up in an environment where reading is a pleasure. You do not need a big library; a consistent habit and a warm atmosphere matter most.

Make reading part of the routine

Set aside 10–15 minutes every day for reading together, for example after dinner or before bed. Consistency matters more than length.

Lead by example

Children copy adults. If they often see their parents reading, they will see it as normal and enjoyable.

Choose suitable books

  • Begin with picture books with short sentences.
  • Pick themes your child likes: animals, vehicles or daily life.
  • Let your child choose the book they want.
  • Raise the difficulty gradually.

Read with expression

Use a different voice for each character. Pause and ask, “What do you think happens next?” Questions like this build comprehension and imagination.

When your child starts reading alone

Take turns: you read a page, your child reads a sentence. When they stumble, help patiently rather than scolding. Celebrate every bit of progress, however small.

Do not make reading a punishment

Do not use reading as a punishment or extra homework. Pleasant experiences make children want to return to books.
